The Butterfly Effect went before the cameras in May 2002. There was a certain amount of tension on the set. Even after a strong audition, Ashton came to this film with a lot of baggage. His comic roots showed but not much else. From the directors on down, the unspoken words on the set were “show me”

And he did.

Ashton reached down deep inside for this role. He had done comedy almost nonstop since he hit town, and even the dramatic range he showed in the ill-fated Texas Rangers was slight compared to the range of dark emotions he would have to display in The Butterfly Effect, Those privy to his work on the film reported an amazing transformation. Gone was the one-note comedic actor. In his place was somebody who, while not perfect, showed some considerable dramatic chops as a tortured soul who uses his own brand of time travel to try to set things right.

Among those suitably impressed and more than a little surprised was his costar, Amy Smart. “I had only seen Ashton do comedy. This was the first dramatic thing I had seen him do. From the minute I stepped on the set I saw how much work Ashton had put into it.”

One of the biggest challenges Ashton faced on The Butterfly Effect was that two other actors would be playing him at a younger age. Since all of his scenes as an adult would be shot before the child actors did their scenes, there was the challenge of making the grown-up character look and move like his younger counterparts. Ashton would sit, talk, and even walk with the younger actors so that every mannerism they had could be duplicated by him. Makeup and a beard added to the tortured look, and Ashton took great pains to put himself in the proper frame of mind. This was not the role to come across as less than believable or subconsciously winking at the camera. Evan Treborn was a tortured soul. Ashton had to feel that way as well.

It was his willingness to go the extra mile that instantly endeared him to the directors and the rest of the cast and crew. Most of the crew had a preconceived idea about Ashton, and it was not all good. They were expecting the good-looking former model and the guy who played all the dumb characters. What they got was an actor willing to do whatever it took to make the best film possible.

Predictably, The Butterfly Effect was not a tension-free ride for Ashton. He was dealing with two firsttime directors while trying to maintain a firm grip on a character that was always teetering on the edge of madness. Ashton sensed that they would eventually lock horns. Sure enough, voices were raised. Everybody wanted his or her way. Compromises had to be reached.

“I was really freaked out,” he reported. “But they were accepting, and they let me try anything I wanted to try. They also told me when I sucked.”
